![]() ![]() The 1042's are not touch screen, they have buttons and dials still (as do the 1242's) which for me was a major factor in going that way - generally I've never been very happy with touch screen in a vehicle (on your boat, in your car, etc.) and especially on a fishing boat I just don't want to be touching screens with fish on my hands or fighting with touch screens when they do not operate smoothly. ![]() ![]() I'm looking forward to seeing how all that stuff works, new boat yet to launch. With Chris's expert guidance I went w/ a pair of 1042 XSV's, phantom radar, a garmin sidescan pair, and a traditional chirp transducer. He really takes the time to explain what works well and what doesn't. Last bit of advice, read as many posts from Wharf Rat as you possibly can. So if you're looking for matching brands and want radar, maybe seek something different than Garmin. I haven't bought any of their radar systems, but I've read enough on this site to avoid their radar. There's very rapid turnover with their equipment and their ActiveCaptain apps and websites don't let you forget that your equipment is out of date. Maybe it's just their cheaper units, I've got a EchoMap Plus 74cv, but they're the "current model" for about 1 year. The biggest complaint with Garmin is their equipment gets discontinued sometimes while it's still being sold in stores. And find their charts are fine, especially now that they own Navionics. And when not abused, can get 8-10 years out of them. Overall, I find Garmin to be pretty easy to learn. I like how I can make a route on my phone the night before and transfer that to my chartplotter when I synch with my phone. I make good use of their QuickDraw feature because there's six miles of cruising 3' deep water out to the inlet where I'm at and it really helps me find the deepest channels on my way out. I have bought a few Garmin GPS chartplotter/sonar combos over the years. Going all out on a high end chartplotter doesn't do anything extra special for me because I just want to be on the water, not showing off $$$ for electronics. First, not sure what your budget is or if you're looking to fish, cruise, etc.įor me, I don't care to have the latest and greatest simply because fishing is a hobby and I'm cheap. ![]()
